Halfway through the lesson the students swap roles so everyone has a chance to answer different questions. focused on creative strategies to make faculty meetings more engaging and valuable to teachers.The New York Times is used in an assignment called Current Events Speed Dating.The purpose of this assignment is to 1) expose students to current events in environmental science, 2) connect those stories to concepts covered in class, and 3) allow students to gain experience discussing important topics in environmental science.The [speed dating] activity reflects this in addition to encouraging dialogue with different classmates.SOCI 380 is a requirement for sociology majors and minors.So here they are: 15 formats for structuring a class discussion to make it more engaging, more organized, more equitable, and more academically challenging.
They can use any reliable news source, but are highly encouraged to use The New York Times.
I called it “speed dating” because they really were setting a date –to do a peer observation!
Teachers in our DODEA grant project (K-12) have worked all year to design four in-depth units using the process.
Next come the low-prep strategies, which can be used on the fly when you have a few extra minutes or just want your students to get more active.
Note that these are not strict categories; it’s certainly possible to simplify or add more meat to any of these structures and still make them work. These are smaller techniques that can be integrated with other instructional strategies and don’t really stand alone.
